The Tax Authorities have begun sending letters requesting that you declare the actual return earned on your Box 3 assets. The Tax Authorities cannot specify exactly when these letters will be sent. The expected timeline is as follows:
Tax Year
2024: not yet known
2023: from September 2025
2022: from July 2025
2021: not yet known
You will receive a separate letter for each tax year. Each letter will state your notional return, which you will need when completing the form. If you are allowed to report actual returns for multiple years, you will only receive the second letter after the Tax Authorities have processed the year mentioned in your first letter. It is recommended that you wait to fill in the form until you receive the letter, as it includes the notional return that must be entered in the OWR form.
If you wish, we can submit the actual return on your behalf using our online tax return software. If we have already handled your tax return, we have access to your applicable notional return. This means we can start submitting the actual return earlier—before you receive the official letter. The module in our tax software is expected to be available from mid-August.
If you are covered by our deferral scheme, we have 26 weeks from the date of the letter to submit the OWR form on your behalf. If you are not under this deferral, the deadline is 12 weeks. It is therefore important to keep the letter safe, so we can monitor the deadline accordingly.
Tax partners
Tax partners may each submit the OWR form individually. It may happen that one partner receives a tax assessment based on the deemed return, while the other is assessed based on the actual return.
